CRITICAL MAGAZINES
The New York Review of Science Fiction was available in PDF, epub, and mobi through Weightless Books, and in POD editions, with 12 issues in 2013. Managing editor was Kevin J. Maroney, who said, ‘‘Our circulation is steady around 200 copies, about 90% in PDF and 10% split between epub and mobi. We get around 80 hits a day for the free content on the web site (two or three articles from every issue) but very little comment traffic. Our most popular article is still Chip Delany’s groundbreaking ‘‘Racism and Science Fiction’’ (from 1998); it’s good to see that it’s still part of the discussion.’’
We saw two of three issues of Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts. Editor was Brian Attebery. The magazine had about 493 subscriptions in 2013.
Science Fiction Studies published three issues in 2013. According to editor Arthur Evans, ‘‘Science Fiction Studies has a subscription base of approximately 800 subscribers, mostly university libraries and academic subscribers.’’ Electronic access to the full text archives of Science Fiction Studies from 1973 to the present is available online through JSTOR, accessible from <www.depauw.edu/sfs/>.
The Cascadia Subduction Zone: A Literary Quarterly, published by Aqueduct Press, produced four issues of 23 pages each. Content included essays in social and literary criticism related to speculative fiction, flash fiction, poetry, art, and reviews of new and classic science and specific titles, with color reproductions of art by the featured artists on the cover and a b&w interior. The magazine is available at <www.thecsz.com>.
There were three issues of academic journal Foundation. According to editor Graham Sleight, ‘‘circulation remains stable in the couple-of-hundreds, mostly via
subscription,’’ buoyed by the recent availability of the magazine via electronic platforms. No. 115 will be Graham Sleight’s last issue of Foundation, with Paul March-Russell taking over as editor.
We saw four issues of Vector, the critical journal of the British Science Fiction Association. Circulation holds steady at approximately 600. Current features editor Shana Worthen reports that Glyn Morgan will take over as features editor of Vector, starting with issue #275.
Scholarly magazine Extrapolation published three issues in 2013. Extrapolation was published by Liverpool University Press, available free online at <www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/>.
Peake Studies published two issues this year. Editor and publisher G. Peter Winnington announced that the October 2013 issue was the final print issue.
